Children’s University

Deepcar St John’s is part of the Sheffield Children’s University.

What is children's University

Sheffield Children’s University (CU) is part of a national initiative that encourages and celebrates children and young people who take part in learning activities outside of school hours. Research shows that children and young people who are rewarded for choosing to learn out of school feel proud and confident about their achievements and do better at school.

The Children’s University celebrates children and young people’s achievements with award certificates and badges. Learning can be at either CU subscribed schools in Sheffield or at registered activity providers across the city, called Learning Destinations.

If you’d like your child to take part in the wide range of activities and awards that the Children’s University offers, they’ll need a passport to learning which they can get from school or other education destinations.

The awards

One credit is awarded for every hour of learning outside of school.

The national awards are:

Bronze (30 hours)

Silver (65 hours)

Gold (100 hours) …and these continue right the way up to 1000 hours!

When presented with a Gold award, they are invited to a special award ceremony, where they are allowed to wear a special Children’s University cap and gown when they are presented with their award.

With each award children and young people receive, they will get a report which outlines their activities and accounts for each hour they have spent learning out of school.

This report can become part of their record of achievement and evidences the learning they have taken part in out of school hours, which can be important when they begin to apply to further education or seek employment.
